Hello my name is Ali Can (23 years old)  and I’m from Turkey.  I’ll be volunteer till July and my host ogranisation is A.L.E.M. I’m working in Kindergarten and in LIGA Foundation.  I will make cooking and language workshops to the children and to help activities in ‘’Casa des Artes’’ in LIGA.

Since I arrived in Lisbon, I have good impression about the city. I really liked city’s soul and local people also really friendly and helpful. After 1,5 month I feel here at ‘home’ and i really appreciate that I had a chance to became EVS volunteer in Lisboa. Bad thing is time passing so quickly! Hope I’ll speak good Portuguese soon! :P

I’m just enjoying this beautiful city with exploring everyday something new. Lisboa has lots of secret spots and I try to find out them which is really fun. I’m used to live here and I feel some kind of ‘local’ even if  I don’t know everyhting about city. (hehe, hope soon!) Morning bica with pastel da nata is my favourite thing ever here in Portugal! (OK, not everyday :p) And Portuguese wine of course.  I adore it! Maybe it will be most thing to miss when I return home :)

Healthy in body and spirit.

Currently working as an EVS volunteer under literacy promotion organization ALEM, with the collaboration of Rota Jovem (PT) and Xena (ITA).

I write after roughly one month and half stay in Lisbon, the city where both our domicile and area of work are located. Currently, I am involved in a number of projects involving (in order of target age): art workshops with preschool kids, general education, class support and afterschool help for primary schoolers, a human rights research and journal/blog redaction project in a secondary school, plus four hours weekly of general assistance to people with special needs and seniors, and, finally, the development of lessons for third age university students. As of now, most of the projects have started, after a comprehensive series of instructions and timetable changes, hopefully now finalized. I’m looking forward to work at the best of my abilities on every single project, with the prospect of a gradually bigger involvement as time passes and the professional relationship with educators and coordinators grows. In any case, personal initiative is the key.

I will now add some simple considerations about my daily life here: Lisbon is a city I have started to discover slowly, helped by the alleged length of my service and stay. Early visits have opened my view on the geography, the architectural style, the social consideration the city and its various sites display, and I largely appreciate what I’ve been given the possibility to discover. Praça do comercio, Belèm, Avenida da Liberdade, Alfama and Mouraria, os Miradouros de Santa Caterina e Luzia, o Jardim de Estrela, and some lesser known (but equally as charming) sites such as Tapada Das Necessidades, Jardim de Torel, Jardim Botànico de Ajuda, Largo de Intendente….the list will be very long by the end, not to mention that a tourist won’t be able to find one fifth of them…

Life at the new home is interesting. Not only because of my luck in living in what looks like an apartment worthy of legends, home of generations of volunteers present and past, but also because it allows for a fun and exciting “family” life with a lot of people from everywhere in the world. I reckon you don’t enjoy very often italian meals, turkish sweets, spanish music, belgian chats, hungarian stories, latvian movies and portuguese wines in the same evening.         

So that’s what going on in this crazy, fascinating and perfectly normal daily life of an international volunteer, in a nutshell. As long as you don’t expect vacations or Erasmus levels of sweet doing nothing (and you should not be wanting them anyway), you’re dead set on a mighty fine experience.

My name is Camille, I'm 26 years old and I'm from Belgium. I am doing an EVS here in Lisbon with ALEM. I will stay here till July. I am going to work with children, giving them art workshop and helping the teachers with theirs tasks. I'll work also with disabled people, in art workshop and dance workshop. My main job will take place in an highschool. We are going to try to make a blog and a newspapers with the teenagers having as main thematic the human rights, for me it's quite challenging to work with teenagers, I really think that with patience and motivation we could be able to do very nice stuff with them.

 It has take some time to start our projects, we had to be patient, but now the machine has been set in motion and the story of my work's adventure will be for another chapter.

Let's start from the very beginning.

October, 7^th, I arrived in Lisbon airport and hours after hours others, at that time unknowed faces, were arriving too. Teresa was waiting for us.

We discovered the house that would be ours for one year, and of course we discovered the faces of those who were going to be part of our daily life for one year.

Even if we all wanted to come here to do a voluntary service, it didn't mean that we were going to get along well. But, actually, in a very short time, I started to feel like at home and to appreciate different little things about each of my new roomates who will become not just roomates but friends.

The first month, we explored the city and the surroundings. We enjoyed the beach in Cascais, visit Sintra, Belem and start to get use to the metro « linha vermelha », you always have to begin with something...

My first impressions of Lisbon were, I think like everyone can feel about it. Beautiful and charming city, beautiful light, fado place, very nice facades,...

It's difficult to tell you my impressions now because I don't feel like a turist anymore, but I don't feel the city as mine neither. But I know it will come with the time...

I already feel like it's quite small, you always meet people you know, it's like feeling like in a town being in a capital, it remembers me Brussels and I think I like it, maybe because I grew up in the countryside...

To conclude, this beginning, in the end, promises a lot of new experiences, encounters, and nice stuff to be remembered after.

Tudo começa em Julho.

De repente uma manhã qualquer de verão na Galiza torna-se imprevisível e emocionante. Duas palavras, “Join us”, bastam para mudar o que seria um ano com a rotina de sempre numa aventura, nesta aventura que é um SVE. Portugal colocava-se no meu horizonte imediato para os próximos meses com um projeto que não tinha apenas a ver com a minha formação mas também me ia permitir trabalhar com jovens. Fixe, não é? Apenas três meses e um monte de jantares de despedida depois cá estava, por fim, com muita vontade de descobrir tudo! O país, a gente, a língua, aquilo que os portugueses gostam de fazer, de ver, de ouvir, de comer, tudo. E cheguei à conclusão, nos dois meses que estou a viver em Lisboa, que adoro estar cá por uma razão muito simples: estou como em casa! 
Já visitei a cidade, sempre maravilhosa e vibrante, os arredores de Lisboa e outras cidades além da cidade. Já conheci gente, ouvi fado e o que não é fado, comi bacalhau e também o que não o é. Já comecei a trabalhar na Rota Jovem, esta associação juvenil sediada em Cascais que vocês já conhecem e na qual realizo tarefas relacionadas com a comunicação num contexto dinâmico e estimulante. E o mais importante é que fiz tudo isso consciente de que ainda me falta muito por fazer, mas contente por  saber que tenho muito tempo por diante para continuar com a descoberta. Agora sou também plenamente consciente de que precisamente quando as coisas não estão a ser fáceis para nós, os jovens neste canto do mundo, tenho a oportunidade de trabalhar dum jeito diferente, com liberdade e criatividade, numa aprendizagem contínua e tentando oferecer sempre o melhor de mim. E esta é uma oportunidade imensa que tenho de aproveitar! 

Pelo que parece, na realidade tudo começou em Outubro. De facto, tudo se tornou real só quando eu pus os pés em Lisboa. Como é que esta nova realidade vai evoluir é algo que só posso saber daqui a nove meses. Mas essa já é outra história que ainda está por escrever.

First month report from blondie Agnese

Ola, to all the readers!

Time here is running totally different then at home, be ready for that! Always, when I am looking back to the things I have done in Portugal, I still can say that time is flying, not going or lingering. Some of you may think that 1, 5 months are enough to get use to the new place, new living conditions, language etc, but this is not my case :) Still now, when I am going to the new restaurant, or passing coffee places, my eyes stays wide open asking myself -why they are putting rice together with French fries, meat and fried eggs on one plate? How it is possible to stay fit and eat so fatty food? Why they drink 8 cups of coffee per day and not complaining about heart disease? Meeting stereotypes and try to break them, meet new ones and somehow put yourself in to all this, face your fears and overcome them, find new challenges and don’t stop to the reached point - this is volunteer’s life! In the middle of all that, be ready to get lost time to time and find yourself in the middle of wild city’s jungle without language skills and dog’s poops all over the street.

First month for me and other volunteers with whom I am living in the heart of Lisbon, was warming up. A lot of free time, when the most important is to manage it, sometimes going by stream also helps, but, as said “surf days” teacher Flo, “don’t waste your time taking every wave, take your time to choose really good one”. It is not about quantity, but about quality. Sometimes every month film festivals, music concerts and new expositions are making me dizzy and confused, but that is cities life and it comes to choices. A lot of amazing places we have seen like Sintra, Cabo de Roca (Europe's westernmost point, "where the land ends and the sea begins"), but still there are lot of abandoned and charming houses in our neighborhood, yet unknown yards with coffees and galleries straight here, in Lisbon.

When somebody asks me how I get in Rota Jovem (because it is the coolest youth association in Portugal), I am saying (by half true, by half laughing) that I have good karma. My colleagues and now also friends in Rota Jovem have experienced a lot, they now what kind of mess volunteers can do, how to manage it and the main thing- how to cheer us, when we are lost. Sometimes, when it feels that I am not doing enough, I am looking back on the done things- intelligent, unordinary intercultural party, taking a part of Imigrarte festival (working in the food zone) helped to sense and survive the city and understand the locals. Actually, that is the main thing through which to grow out from tourist position and see the real colors of the city and country as a whole.

As my responsibilities in Rota Jovem are connected with activities (workshops, participating street actions and Rota Jovem representing), I took a part in Surf Day organization and it turned a lot of fun. Laughter and trembles, satisfaction about challenging ourselves with weather and waves are the best reaction which we could get from participants. Christmas party organization and Saturday workshops are in the nearest future for me.

 Being a volunteer is a huge plus also because a can enjoy all the workshops which are organized by rest volunteers- knitting workshop, graphic design, German language and the theatre sport). In next month my responsibilities will grow, as some volunteers will finish their work here. Go, go, go girl!

Diário de Bordo: O início de uma experiência intercultural.

Olá arrotantes!  
A Elena é uma das novas voluntárias a realizar um projeto de Serviço Voluntário Europeu em Portugal. Durante os próximos meses, ela estará a colaborar com o Blog da Rota Jovem em variadas crónicas, e vais poder ouvir um pouco das suas reflexões, experiências e interações com outras pessoas. Se não pudeste vir à Festa Intercultural do passado dia 8 de Novembro, em breve ficarás a conhecer um pouco de todo o grupo. Para já, fica a saber como está a ser a adaptação da Elena:

"Há já três semanas que estou em plena festa intercultural! 

Sim, leste bem. A minha própria experiência intercultural começou a 7 de Outubro, no exacto momento em que cheguei a Lisboa. Oito horas depois de me ter despedido dos meus pais (com muitos beijos e abraços) cá estava, num outro país, a partilhar um apartamento com mais sete pessoas que não conhecia, e com as quais tinha que me comunicar numa língua que não era a minha (nem a deles também). 

Assim temos levado estas três semanas, e pergunto-me se esta experiência é ou não uma festa intercultural diária? Novos costumes, novas comidas, novos pontos de vista sobre as coisas e sobretudo, uma fugida constante dos estereótipos. Tudo isto adornado com novas comidas, novas formas de comunicarmos (o nosso português avança firme de fraco para razoável, o que não é pouca coisa em tão pouco tempo), e principalmente um conjunto de novas experiências. 

Agora temos a oportunidade de partilhar tudo isto com todos os que gostam de descobrir novas culturas, que apresentam sempre novos interesses, que têm espírito de iniciativa e gostam de se divertir enquanto conhecem novas pessoas.

A Festa Intercultural ocorreu no passado dia 8 de Novembro e esta foi a nossa receita para uma festa perfeita: nove jovens europeus com muita vontade de dar a conhecer os seus países, um grupo de pessoas curiosas a querer descobri-los, um bocadinho de boa música e boa paparoca para que o conhecimento mútuo se tornasse mais engraçado. Lá está, é possível ficares a conhecer a Europa sem saíres de Cascais!"

Diário de Bordo: Chegada da Johanna!

A Johanna é uma rapariga sorridente e dinâmica vinda da Alemanha, a fazer Erasmus em Portugal. Ela estará connosco até Dezembro e aguarda pela vossa visita! Se precisas de mais desculpas para vir ter connosco, ficas a saber que ela irá dar o Tandem de Alemão todas as terças-feiras, entre as 17h30 e as 18h30 (tens é de ter já algumas bases...mas para mais informações consulta o nosso site!)

 "After arriving in Portugal last January and studying one semester in Lisboa through the Erasmus Programme, I wanted to put everything I learned until now into some practical work and experience in Portugal from a different kind of view.

As I am studying European Ethnology, traveling and living in different places and in different cultures always inspired me. It’s a great opportunity to get to know a specific culture more deeply, like during this one year stay in Portugal.  Nobody can ever take away those experiences and memories you collect during a stay abroad. It’s great to see your feeling changing from “still feeling foreign” into eventually the coming up feeling of “familiarity and confidence”.  And this is what is happening to me right now. I start feeling home here.  

Rota Jovem is also part of this. I was so lucky to get an Erasmus Placement here at this youth organization for the next three months. Although I am only working since less than three weeks here, I feel already very comfortable at Rota Jovem. Everyone is always helping me if things are still unfamiliar to me or if I still have some language difficulties.  My colleagues set a big value on giving me the chance to take on responsibility, working independent, bringing up new ideas and making me feel comfortable here. Rota Jovem inspires me and I try to also inspire them.  Any ideas here at Rota Jovem can be changed into activities and that’s what I like a lot. 

Therefore I’m looking forward and I am very excited for the time here at Rota Jovem and the experiences and memories I will collect!"

Aposto que já têm muitas saudades minhas e andam a estranhar eu não mandar novidades?!?

Pois é, não tenho tido tempo nenhum pois para alem de ter muito trabalho, de andar a passear/ viajar (e muito :) ) ando ocupada a ser famosa :D

Depois de ser estrela no festival de Cannes a fazer figuras parvas a falar com uma ovelha e ... em francês ... desta vez sou estrela de Tv Georgiana ... bem não é bem Tv... é webTv... mas por algum lado tinha de começar :D

Hello))) EVS-this is a chance which should be used by everyone )) Your motivation can be different, but anyway you can share your experience, learn, influence and be influenced and sometimes change your live and the lives of the others) I'm doing EVS Portugal Lisbon-Cascais) I'm volunteer in a youth organization Rota Jovem))) Better place difficult to imagine, this is one of the main organizations in Portugal, they have lots of experience of international projects. Any ideas and wishes are perceived positively, even the crazy ones, that for me was a pleasant surprise. The organization has lots of activities so even if you do not have your own ideas you can always join event and help in Rota Jovem. Mentor (your official one), I was lucky and I got attentive Portuguese girl) I must admit that the whole team Rota Jovem are great people)) If you need advice, it would sound like this: Select the country you like, choose a project that fits your interests and Go for it!! Lembram-se do Jason?!

Since my arrival in Portugal in September, I have experienced a cultural adventure like never before! Despite having travelled to many destinations throughout Europe, it is only once you live somewhere that you get a real feel for the culture and way of life.

My EVS project itself has helped a lot with my integration in Portugal. Working in Rota Jovem, a youth organisation in Cascais, has introduced me to so many new people through numerous activities and events. Indeed, by organising and participating in various educational, cultural and outdoor activities, I have been introduced to so many aspects of life in Portugal, and therefore very lucky to have such an "authentic" experience.

Living in Lisbon and working in Cascais has also given me the perfect lifestyle! Lisbon is an incredible city, so full of life and spirit. There is always music, art or sport on offer, and the Portuguese people have a real warmth and energy that is really contagious! And every morning I take the train along the coast to Cascais, a beautiful journey to such a beautiful coastal town!

However, the most unique aspect of my EVS experience is the living arrangement - an apartment in Lisbon with 7 other volunteers from Spain, France, Poland, Romania and Belarus! I have learnt so much about the varying cultures throughout Europe, from the languages and traditions to the food, music and drink!

So far, my EVS experience has exceeded all my expectations. My mind has been truly stretched by all that I have seen and learnt, and as Oliver Holmes once said; now it will   never go back to its old dimensions.

Fitness with Babusckas

This consists in 30/40 min of fun... This is maybe the activity that I most like, the group is around 8-10 ladies and they just want to do some exercise and most important thing to have some activity outside of their houses and to meet different people. In the begin I was doing this alone but now every time I bring more 2/3 volunteers and both parts really like it. They are very funny and friendly, one funny story is the fact that they want to find a wife for each volunteer... 

English Speaking Club School 61

This is a informal speaking club, consist into discussions of some topics like Intergeneration, Racism, Differences between West Europe and East Europe, etc. This Speaking Club was created because this kids want to improve their English and they were not liking the activities that we were doing in the classes, so we find this way to do something that the kids will like. This Speaking Club is completely volunteer so only the kids that are interesting go there.

Os estagiários LDV já chegaram!

Se tens passado pela Rota Jovem já te deves ter cruzado com eles! A Marta, a Ari, a Laia,  Javi, a Helga e o Alejando vieram para Portugal fazer estágio Leonardo Da Vinci e vão estar cá até 25 de Julho. A Marta vai estagiar no Centro Social do Pisão, com pessoas com doenças mentais; a Ari e o Javi irão estar a estagiar na Ludoteca da Galiza, com crianças desse bairro; a Laia irá colaborar com a Associação Salamandra Dourada e trabalhará com a comunidade da Ameixoeira; a Helga estará no ATL da Galiza, a trabalhar com crianças e jovens e o Alejandro  vai desenvolver trabalho de animador social.Neste momento estão a acabar o curso de português aqui ao nosso lado na Biblioteca de Cascais. 
Se quiseres conhecê-los aparece! :D

 

Petra, Michaela e Matina - Estagiárias da República Checa

I like to know this city very much like it. Lisbon is a nice, big city, but I expected more from this city. Thus, I like the Cascais and Oieras. I also really like the coast.

I collect experiences every day, always fresh and new and still more and more. Trips were great, I met a lot of beautiful sights and I'm thrilled. The trips I have lots of photos. Natalie is a good woman's a lot of fun and well spoken English. Beautifully us to describe all the sights, palaces and castles.

Working with Irene, went by so fast, but still, I'm very fond of her. She spoke to us in English beautifully and everything we have always tried to describe, so that we understand it. She's a great woman, and I'll remember it forever. And of course, everything that you can enjoy, you'll remember forever.

This is why I want to thank you for this kindness and cheerfulness. Thank you.

I like to write you about my visit the Portugal. I think, it's nice country and also culture is very nice. 

My experiences there are extensive. The job on greenhouse with Irene was very nice and a lot of work, what I did, was interesting. Of course, transplating was boring thing, but co-workers were fine and funny. I am curious on the last week, but I think, that it will be good and weather could be fine, but prognosis reports rain.. All week will be raining... I hope, that we will anywhere under roof. Work with Irene was beautiful. She said a lot of about our job.

How I wrote on start of the letter, culture there is very nice. Once I was there, in Belem and I saw some monumets, but with Natali it was much better. I am glad that I could to be there and maybe sometime I will come back. After univerzity, of course. 

In Lisbon and in Cascais it was very nice. There are a lot of monumets, which stand on this to see them.

I would like to share my feelings of work with you.
I really liked working with Iren in greenhouse. It is very good experience to me. Now i know, how I can send oak and any else trees. Iren is very nice and good teacher. 
Anyway, trips were sooo good. Natalia is nice too. Lisabon is beautiful city but more i liked Sintra. The most I like an ocean, today Petra and me were in ocean. We enjoyed watter and sun.

Ana Marques, Itália

Olá,

Faz um mês e  uma semana que cheguei a Panta Rei.

Panta Rei é uma Cooperativa Agrícola  situada a 15 km de Perugia (Região de Umbria) em Itália.

Antes de mais apresento-me, chamo-me Ana Marques tenho 22 anos e venho do Porto (Portugal), sou formada em Urbanismo e Ordenamento do Território e candidatei-me a este projecto em Panta Rei com mais 3 voluntarios, dois brasileiros e uma espanhola.

Em Panta Rei podemos encontrar vários projectos, entre eles,  alimentação biológica, educação ambiental, técnicas sustentáveis, energias renováveis e trabalho na horta.

Na nossa primeira semana tivemos a conhecer o espaço, pois toda a cooperativa tem aproximadamente 210 hectares, desde a horta, o bosque, a estrutura principal,  a casa dos voluntários, etc.

Depois de quase um mês em Panta Rei foi feito um fim de semana de encontro Wwoof de toda a Itália (Wwoof é um programa de intercâmbio, troca de trabalho entre o voluntário e as quintas em que estas oferecem alojamento, alimentação e a oportunidade dos voluntários aprenderem mais sobre estilos de vida orgânica, tais como, a agricultura orgânica, permacultura, construção ecológica e técnicas ambientais amigáveis). O Wwoof é um programa que existe em vários países, entre eles, Portugal e Itália.

Neste fim de semana foram feitas palestras, um mercado, ouvimos a tarantela, música Jazz, comida biológica de toda a Itália.

Faz hoje precisamente um mês que cheguei a Kurmene para realizar o meu projecto SVE, pacata aldeia no interior da Letónia com cerca de 500 habitantes (e talvez apenas 300 durante os dias de trabalho). Habituado à vida nas grandes cidades, acabei por estranhar ao inicio o facto de viver num sitio onde não há um café, um restaurante ou um bar para ir com os amigos,  o facto de raramente ver pessoas da minha faixa etária, com excepção do meu mentor, e principalmente o facto de praticamente ninguém falar em inglês. No entanto com o passar dos dias fui me acostumando a este novo estilo de vida e agora já me sinto praticamente em casa e até já consigo pedir o que quero no mini-mercado (em letão claro).

Diariamente vou cerca de 45 min ao infantário, onde ensino algum vocabulário de inglês, organizo jogos, e algumas actividades de trabalho manual e desenho. No resto do tempo aproveito para organizar algumas actividades, como por exemplo um piquenique de inverno, com cerca de -20ºC mas que não impediu cerca de 4 horas de convívio à volta de uma fogueira, treinos de ténis de mesa e mais recentemente aulas de inglês e francês para adultos.

Já tive também a oportunidade de conhecer alguns voluntários vindos de toda a Europa  que estão na Letónia, partilhando imensas ideias e experiências, bem como organizar actividades em conjunto. Tem sido uma experiência fantástica e inesquecível e sinto-me tão feliz por saber que ainda tenho 5 meses pela frente!

Começou a aventura de um ano de SVE em Rustavi, Geórgia.

Apesar do frio terrivel que aqui faz, para uma portuguesa porque os polácos parecem que estão na primavera, e das diferenças culturais tenho a dizer que escolhi um país fantastico cheio de oportunidades e uma associação que, por serem todos ex-SVE, tem atenção às nossas necessidades e estão abertos a todos os nossos projectos.

Os Geórgianos são simpaticos e apesar de eu não perceber nada do que dizem e eles não me perceberem a mim, pois russo é a segunda lingua e pouco falam de inglês, lá arranjamos maneira de comunicar e até já fiz amizades.

Rustavi é uma cidade calma mas fica a 20 Km da capital Tbilisi e de Marshrutka, o transporte tradicional da Geórgia, é facil e barato lá chegar. É mais barato ir a Tbilisi e voltar do que comprar 1 litro de leite que é uma reliquia aqui.

A Associação onde estou é muito aberta e muito activa a nivel de projectos e desejam construir uma ponte pela Europa até Portugal. Já cá coloquei a bandeira portuguesa mas estão abertos a receber mais voluntários lusitanos e até tem um modo de vida parecido connosco.

Caso estejam a pensar em fazer SVE estejam atentos pois a Geórgia é um país a descobrir.

O que faz uma portuguesa na Estónia?” Era a pergunta recorrente no aeroporto, na rua, nas aldeias, no mercado, nos bares... Em Outubro, ela começou a perguntar-se sobre o que responder e, dois meses depois, aconteceu Invert to Alert.

Na Estónia, os voluntários coordenados pela organização não-governamental noOR tem direito a 20 euros por mês para planearem e porem em prática uma acção local relacionada com o seu projecto de Serviço Voluntário Europeu. Como voluntária na noOR, cujo principal objectivo é abrir janelas a pessoas com poucas oportunidades, decidi focar-me no campo das pessoas com deficiência, tomando este conceito como algo bastante amplo e subjectivo.

Invert to Alert foi, assim, um jogo de inversão das rotinas, do espaço, da interacção das pessoas com os lugares. Aconteceu no Dia Internacional das Pessoas com Deficiência, 3 de Dezembro, no maior centro comercial da capital estoniana (o Viru Keskus recebe 40 mil pessoas todos os dias, sendo que a cidade tem cerca de 400 mil habitantes).

Invert to Alert contou com a participação de 40 voluntários de vários países; três línguas – inglês, estoniano e russo –; um budget microscópico; e muita força de vontade. Mas não parou em 2012. A acção vai continuar nos próximos meses, abordando tópicos como a audição e o autismo. Para conhecerem melhor a acção, vejam o video e consultem o nosso blog (inverttoalert.wordpress.com).
